Koi No Yokan

Deftones are an alt-metal band from Sacramento, California. Their eighth studio album is titled 'Koi No Yokan', a Japanese term loosely translating to “the knowledge that a future love is inevitable”. The album was released on the heels of losing their longtime bassist, and is thick with references to duality, conflict, and mixed emotions.

The concept

I set out to choose a song from the album that I felt best summed up their tone, and interpret that into a dynamic double LP cover. I wanted to depict a couple or even a single person being split by opposing mind-states, all the while holding on for dear life to their once shared connection.

The breakdown

The brightly colored manifestation represents the vibrant range of imagination, all thoughts productive or creative, while the gray depicts pessimism, negativity or the mundane. Click here to listen to ‘Rosemary’, the song that inspired the cover.
